Winter Garden II took place at D-Day adventure park this Saturday, we had ~73 players. Playing the roles of the local Insurgents, Civilians and Coalition forces battling for control of the Shiakot Valley.
We introduced the use again this year of the medic tube system as well as required translators for Coalition interaction with the local civilian populace.
I’d like to thank Tulsa Airsoft, Kastway Airsoft, Tulsa New Holland, Bunker Boxes, MSE and D-Day Adventure Park for making Winter Garden possible this year! I’d also like to thank all of the players who attended and gave their support; I appreciate it.

Observations:
THE GOOD
This OP basically designed for two types of players. Those who want to be high-speed, low-drag, running around the AO ninja style, drawing the least amount of attention while they accomplish objectives. The others are the players that want to get in their trigger time and take it to the enemy force-on-force style.
I was surprised to see such a large firefight take place at the Airfield with both factions dedicating the majority of their forces to the skirmish. Evidently the airfield had some epic gun battles from the traffic that came over both command nets. I witnessed some amazing individual play by the Insurgent forces, such Katman who was able to Safety Kill nearly the entire LARP squad.
The quickness in which the civilians were dispatched for the Mosque by the Insurgents was a real shocker. I thought with all the crafty veteran players we had up there, we could hold it forever. Wow, was I wrong…job well done, Regulators.
Movement from both sides seemed very linear. I was surprised by how little of the terrain was utilized by both forces to try and out-maneuver the other or complete objectives. This could be partly due to the large size of the area and how physically challenging the terrain is to navigate.
Again, I was surprised by the lack of security shown by either force when dealing with Civilians armed or unarmed. Several times I was able to wander though each forces’ lines armed with hardly anyone questioning me and I was never searched. This proved to be fatal for Coalition forces on more than one occasion.
Both factions had some excellent role playing exchanges with the civilian populace.
I witnessed some excellent displays of sportsmanship and play on both sides.
The Bad
In a larger, competitive OP like this, you are bound to have issues with players and hit-calling. I had more than a few reports of “shady” playing and some questionable hit-calling. While I often dismiss the majority of these claims as “new players not understanding the physics of a BB going through 30 feet of tall grass”, some of these complaints did have merit and we are investigating those claims. Understand there is no “three strike” rule in the airsoft community for cheaters; they simply will not be tolerated.
We also had an issue with spawn camping, and let me clear this up right now. The only person who is at fault for that situation would be me. I did not explain the rules clearly which lead to the confusion. No players are to blame for that small debacle, only poor administration on my part and I apologize for that. I believe I cleared the issue up once I became aware of the situation, but I know it left some players pissed off and again, I apologize.
THE UGLY
Good news NO Ugly for this OP!
We started late, which is nothing new to airsoft. The only real “snag” we ran into was dealing with lack of daylight and the impending cold front. After the first evolution, I elected to skip all the afternoon missions and go directly to force-on-force for control of the City. Hopefully this change got everyone the trigger time they wanted. I did not want to over-work all the forces in the latter half of the day.
I’d like to thank the following people for their time, effort and support:
Tulsa Airsoft, thanks Johnny and his gang for supporting WG for another year!
Kastway Airsoft, thanks to Rick for helping out again for another year!
Tulsa New Holland, Travis and the Mystery crew — you guys rock!
Bunker Boxes, thanks Cope for some beautifully local crafted gun boxes.
D-Day, thanks Dwayne for building the best AO on earth!
MSE, enough said!
Special thanks to our LARP, Command and Picture Crew:
Frosty, Claymore, Freak, Beetle, Skitch, Tyler, Rowdy, Doc Dodge, Rocketman, Thurgen, Arkus, Keli, Stephine.
Again hope you all had fun this year at Winter Garden and hope to see you in the near future at Invasion!
